How to become an LSST Principal Investigator (PI)

Good day

A Zoom discussion on “How to apply to become an LSST Principal Investigator (PI)” will be held on 8 July from 14:00 to 15:00. This is aimed at scientists resident in South Africa who want access to data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.

The discussion will include brief presentations from Patricia Whitelock (the SA LSST Program Manager) and from the three SA PIs appointed in 2019: David Buckley (SAAO, UCT), Matt Hilton (UKZN) and Michelle Lochner (SARAO, UWC).

Following the presentations, there will be an opportunity to discuss the Rubin Observatory and the application process.

Details of the South African application process, deadlines etc, can be found here:

https://lsst.saao.ac.za/ Please look at this before the zoom meeting.

Note that, as things stand, only research students and postdocs will be eligible to become Junior Associates of the SA PIs, as indicated on the web page. I am trying to persuade the Rubin Observatory people that this should be extended to early career researchers with staff positions, but there is no guarantee they will agree.  I would like to ascertain the perceived need for this at or following the zoom meeting.

The meeting will be recorded and the recording made available to those who cannot attend.
